What would you want to tell them about drawing conclusions about sex based on this kind of information?

PAGE 1:You will receive written feedback on the questions you choose to answer within 1-2 days after the due date of the assignment. Please use information from the Power Points slides, as well as the textbook, to answer these questions. Responses should be anywhere from 1-2 paragraphs for each question.

Please provide a response to 2 of the critical thinking questions for this chapter. Label your answers clearly (i.e., which question you are responding to)

1. In the question-and-answer portion of your talk to the high school students, several students ask you about unusual sexual situations and practices they have learned about on TV talk shows. What would you want to tell them about drawing conclusions about sex based on this kind of information?

2. A friend confides in you that she has been having some sexual fantasies recently that she thinks are unconventional and strange. She is feeling a lot of anxiety about these fantasies and is beginning to feel depressed about having them. She believes that these fantasies indicate that she is sexually abnormal. What would you say to try to help her?

3. Do you feel that the moral values and principles taught to you by your parents and others as you were growing up still apply to your life now as an independent adult? If so, are you comfortable living by them? If not, how have you and your values changed?

4. Suppose you want to study the progression of sexual intimacy in dating couples. You are interested in knowing how long, on average, the two people have known each other or have been dating when they first engage in various intimate behaviors (kissing, erotic touching, nudity, genital touching, oral sex, intercourse). What kind of study would you propose? How would you obtain subjects? Exactly how would you go about gathering your data? What methodological problems do you think you might encounter?

PAGE 2:What are the concerns regarding sexual trigger warnings expressed by Neutill? How effective might Winterichs approach resolve Neutills issues? How can teachers and students discern the difference between discomfort and trauma? Is there sexuality-related content that you might find triggering? If so, do you believe instructors should include trigger warnings? Do sexuality educators have the responsibility to create a totally safe space for learning to occur? If so, what might this look like? If not, how can education reduce the potential for harm in the classroom?

What is Nutrition?

What is Nutrition?

A new science that borrows from other sciences (chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology) that looks at the relationship between the foods you eat and your health.

Nutrients: substances found in food that help promote the growth and maintenance of the body, i.e. cell rebuilding and repair

6 Essential Nutrients

Essential means the body cant make on its own, must obtain via food/drink.

1. Carbohydrate
2. Lipids
3. Protein
4. Vitamins
5. Minerals
6. Water

The top three are referred to as the Macronutrients (needed in larger amounts) while the bottom three are referred to as the Micronutrients (needed in smaller amounts). The top three are also referred to as the energy yielding nutrients. WHY?

The top 3 contain calories which provide energy. Energy not in the sense of Rah, Rah I have a lot of energy right now because I just drank a Red Bull but energy in the sense of the capacity or ability to do work like go to class, go to work, do the things you need to do.

In order to have adequate energy there are 4 key components:

1. Quality diet
2. Adequate rest
3. Stress/anxiety management
4. Exercise

What is a calorie? Technically, a calorie approximates the energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 C

For our purposes, know that a calorie is the measurement of a foods energy value.

Know the following values:

1g carbohydrate = 4 calories
1g lipid = 9 calories
1g protein = 4 calories

Gram for gram, lipids contain over twice as many calories as a comparable measurement of carbohydrate or protein. Lipids are energy dense!

The Micronutrients are calorie free. As a result, they DO NOT provide you with energy. Theyre essential and very important, but they, themselves, do not provide us with energy. They are more like spark plugs on a cars engine. The engine (macronutrients) does the work while the spark plugs (micronutrients) help.

1g of alcohol contains 7 calories! But, is alcohol a nutrient? No. Why? Because it does not meet the definition of a nutrient: does not promote the growth and maintenance of the body!

3 Factors that Determine how many Calories a Person Needs Each Day:

1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): Calories needed to sustain the body in a state of rest

Factors that affect BMR: Height (the taller you are, the higher the BMR generally. A tall body requires more fuel!), growth (children, adolescents, building muscle) pregnancy (~300 extra calories/day), lactation (~500 calories/day), physical activity, gender (Men from an evolutional perspective have more muscle tissue than women, women have more adipose fat tissue. The more muscle a person has, the higher the BMR. BUT, this does not mean every man has a higher BMR than every woman. Active women can have higher BMRs than men), body temperature (for every 1 degree F above normal, BMR increases by ~ 7%)

2. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): The number of calories burned through the involuntary acts of digestion and absorption. ~5 calories for every 100 consumed will be burned through TEF.

3. Physical Activity: The more active a person is, especially through weight training, the higher the BMR generally.

What does a Nutrition Diet Look Like? 4 Characteristics:

1. Adequate: An adequate diet is one that includes enough: dietary fiber, healthy fats, whole grains, fruits and veggies and lean protein sources.

2. Balanced: Unless a person has a disease state, all food groups should be consumed.

3. Varied: Including a wide selection of foods. If you normally eat a red apple, switch things up and eat a green one! Doing so only increases the nutrient profile of your diet.

4. Moderation: Probably the hardest concept. Moderation is about eating until you hit satiety which means you eat until youre satisfied, not full. If you are able to do this, weight should fall to whats normal for your body type and genetics. It takes practice though as many of us were raised to be members of the clean plate club!)

How will you diagnose and manage a patient with chronic pain and a co-occurring mood or substance use disorder?

1-In your personal or professional (clinical) experience, have you known or seen a patient with chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, and/or fibromyalgia? Briefly explain the patients presentation and treatment (keeping patient confidentiality). Provide evidence-based articles that support the chosen treatment.
2-How will you diagnose and manage a patient with chronic pain and a co-occurring mood or substance use disorder? Identify a guideline and an evidence-based article that support your chosen management of psychotherapy, complementary alternative medicine, or psychopharmacology.

What did you find challenging when giving instructions or following directions?

Overview

This is an example of two personalities in one body. The person who draws does not see what was happening and is controlled by the other person or personality.

Directions

Find a friend or familiar member to participate in this assignment. The only requirement is that they must be able to follow and give directions. Each person will need a sheet of paper and a pen or pencil. You are encouraged to record this for reflection, but recording is not required.

Choose one person to describe (A) and one person to draw (B).

Person A should come up with a slightly complex common object, such as a tree, car, stove, or something similar to describe to Person B without naming it. Person B should close their eyes or wear a blindfold and draw while listening to Person Bs directions. Person B should use descriptors only, such as, Draw four circles inside a square. Move your pen three inches to the right and draw a three-inch squiggly line. They should not say, Draw a car. Person A should be able to see what Person B is doing.

When the drawing is finished, switch roles and have Person B give instructions while Person A draws.

Both participants should answer the following questions:

1-What did you find challenging when giving instructions or following directions?
To what extent do you think your drawing matches the other persons directions?
2-What was your expectation compared to the result?
3-What emotions did you experience (laughter, frustration, annoyance, and so on)?
