Discussion – Research, Evidence-based Practice and Quality Improvement

Discussion: Research and EBP

Discussion: Research and EBP

Overview

This discussion will really help you dive into the course and develop some key skills while providing an overview of concepts that you will apply throughout the remainder of the assignments.

First, you will determine the difference among research, evidence based practice (EBP) and quality improvement. Then you will integrate how you use these 3 concepts in practice as an advanced practice nurse (APN).

Next and perhaps one of the biggest foundation level skills needed in this course is actually performing a successful library search of terms. So in this discussion you will evaluate and compare the difference in results when searching through 2 different databases. After determining how the various databases work and see how one may produce better results for certain topics than the other selected database, you can think about how you would apply that info. in an EBP model.

There are a lot of EBP models that a person or facility may choose to use. Reviewing these models will allow you to identify where you are in the process of a research problem and what steps are next. You will be using various stages of these models in this course to discover and appraise evidence to support a phenomenon of interest. If you don’t use each of the steps of the research process, you may find that your ability to change practice or use the best EBP in practice fails or may not yield the results intended.

Reminders

As you get started be sure to keep the following in mind:

1. Write your posts in a Microsoft Word document and save it to 2 different sources. Information is often lost and computers crash, so don’t get caught without a copy of your own work. You will also need to submit your discussion to turnitin, so you will need a word document to do so (see #5). You are not allowed to do a recording for this discussion.

2. Copy and paste your initial post directly into the discussion area.

3. Use the edit tools within the discussion to help you with centering titles, headings, etc. However, faculty are aware that hanging indents do not always copy/paste correctly. We will take that into consideration, but all other APA formatting, grammar, syntax, etc. should be strictly adhered to.

4. No title page is needed. Attachments should not be included. Submit your initial post to Turnitin only.

5. Submit your paper to turnitin and review the report. Make any necessary changes to the initial post and resubmit (as needed) to turnitin by the due date. Re-submission to turnitin is not required, but encouraged if your report shows high similarity. You will NOT submit the report anywhere; faculty will review your reports directly in the Turnitin system.

6. Post your cross posts by the due dates. You are encouraged to post to a student who does not have any other posts. You are required to respond to at least 1 peer’s initial post. You do not have to submit your Cross Post to Turnitin.

7. See Rubric as an attachment: Topic Discussion Research and EBP pdf

8. First person is permitted for your discussions only.

Initial posts should be no more than 750 words; cross posts should be no longer than 250 words.

Click on the attachment labeled Topic Discussion Research and EBP for a copy of the Rubric.

Directions

In your initial post, respond to the following questions. Include links to the information available online. These sources will be counted in place of evidence-based resources for this discussion.

1-What is the purpose of a National Provider Identifier (NPI)? How do you apply for one, including the application forms, process, cost, and length of time it takes for issuance?
2-How do you apply for an APRN license, including the application forms, educational requirements, cost, and time frame?
3-Do you plan to obtain a DEA license? Why or why not? How do you apply for a DEA license, including the application forms, educational requirements, cost, and time frame? How does the presence or absence of a DEA license affect your practice as an APRN?
4-Does the Nurse Practice Act of the state you plan to practice in have geographical, communication, and prescription restrictions? What implications does this have for your PMHNP practice? How is this tracked in the event of an audit?

“Start-Up of Blissful Gardens”

“Start-Up of Blissful Gardens” Please respond to the following:

Review the Case Study: Start-Up of Blissful Gardens, located on page 510 of your text. Next, suggest two (2) marketing goals for the facility that Ms. Remedios could implement.
Take a position on which of the three (3) types of market targeting strategies (single-offer, mass-market coverage, single-segment concentration, or selective specialization) would work best for this start-up. Provide a rationale for your position.

Examine changes introduced to reform or restructure the U.S. health care delivery system.

Examine changes introduced to reform or restructure the U.S. health care delivery system. In a 1,000-1,250 word paper, discuss action taken for reform and restructuring and the role of the nurse within this changing environment.

Include the following:

Outline a current or emerging health care law or federal regulation introduced to reform or restructure some aspect of the health care delivery system. Describe the effect of this on nursing practice and the nurse’s role and responsibility.
Discuss how quality measures and pay for performance affect patient outcomes. Explain how these affect nursing practice and describe the expectations and responsibilities of the nursing role in these situations.
Discuss professional nursing leadership and management roles that have arisen and how they are important in responding to emerging trends and in the promotion of patient safety and quality care in diverse health care settings.
Research emerging trends. Predict two ways in which the practice of nursing and nursing roles will grow or transform within the next five years to respond to upcoming trends or predicted issues in health care.

o Patients rights (1-2 page paper identifying patients rights and how you would enforce them when you are working as an RN)

Is there any value you think should be understood by everyone as an objective right or wrong, that is, something not just right and wrong as a matter of individual or cultural opinion?

This week I have a twofold question: 1) Is there any value you think should be understood by everyone as an objective right or wrong, that is, something not just right and wrong as a matter of individual or cultural opinion? We all know people do, in fact, disagree about morality a great deal and perhaps always will. So I am not asking whether you think there is, in fact, a value everyone will agree with. That is, I am not asking you for a descriptive judgment that just reports the facts. Rather, I am asking you to offer a prescriptive judgment: what do you think should be objectively right or wrong? If you think you have a candidate, tell us what it is. If you dont think there are any objective values, explain why. The second question is: 2) Do you think moral relativism is true? In providing an answer, please defend your claim with reference to some of the arguments for and/or against moral relativism in the reading. This is a tough subject and you don’t have to have any certainty or even a high degree of confidence in your response. Just do your best to think the ideas through a bit and see where you stand. If you are indeed tentative in your beliefs, feel free to make that clear.

Here are some study questions related to the readings (see links below) for week one. Again, I will also include a couple of important points not mentioned or emphasized enough in the readings.

What are some of the factors that gave rise to moral relativism? What is descriptive relativism?
What is moral relativism?

What is the difference between descriptive and moral relativism? What is normative relativism?

What is cultural relativism? What is moral subjectivism?

Know that moral relativism is typically understood as either cultural relativism or, more rarely, moral subjectivism or individual relativism.

What are the reasons for and against moral relativism discussed in the reading?

The Meaning of Atlas Shrugged
Write an essay on ONE of the following topics:

1. The covers of many editions of Atlas Shrugged describe it as a mystery story, not about the murder of mans body, but about the murderand rebirthof mans spirit. Choose three of the most significant mysteries you encounter in Part I of the novel and explain what you think are the solutions to each. For each one, how does it relate to the murderand rebirthof mans spirit?
2. Atlas Shrugged tells the story of what happens to a society when its most productive members go missing. Where today can a similar situation be found? Select a well-known situation that has made international headlines. 3. Explain what you understand to be both the cause and the effect of the situation. In what ways are the circumstances similar to the story of Atlas Shrugged? In what ways are they different?
James says to Cherryl: I dont want to be loved for anything. I want to be loved for myself not for anything I do or have or say or think. What does James mean by this? What do Cherryls responses to James suggest her view of love to be? What is your view? How does this issue relate to the wider themes of the novel?

The essay must be double spaced. Essays will be judged on whether the student is able to argue for and justify his or her viewnot on whether the Institute agrees with the view the student expresses.

Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Atlas Shrugged.
