Hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells, transports oxygen throughout the body. Individuals who are homozygous for the normal hemoglobin allele are designated AA. Individuals who receive one normal hemoglobin allele from one parent and one mutant hemoglobin, or sickle cell, allele from the other parent are heterozygous and said to have sickle cell trait. Their genotype is AS. People with sickle cell disease are homozygous for the sickle cell allele (SS genotype). Lab: -Worksheet: Use this worksheet to investigate population genetics, the Hardy-Weinberg principle, and how natural selection alters the frequency distribution of heritable traits. Rather than use beads as described on the worksheet, we will be using a random number generator in Excel.  Worksheet with the procedure for Simulating Natural Selection and the heterozygote advantage (with questions) -ATTACHED -Spreadsheet with random number generator (includes multiple tabs, 1 for each simulation) -ATTACHED -After completing the simulations, create 3 bar graphs (one for each simulation), with the y-axis as the genotypic frequencies and bars representing each genotype of each generation. -*Paste a copy of your final graphs (with appropriate labels) into the worksheet. * Part 2 of the worksheet: Genetic Drift For this activity, you can follow the procedure as outlined on page 28 of the lab manual. The only difference is that you will be using the Lab 3_spreadsheet to use a random number generate instead of throwing a die. Be sure to enter the data as the running total, NOT the score of the die. Also, you will be plotting your data in excel. Be sure to use appropriate headings and axis titles.

As a consultant, you are submitting a tender/proposal to a government of a country to help them prepare a country-level profile (in the form of a final report). You believe that you have the necessary data management and analysis skills to carry out this task. Country level profiles are used to assist policy makers in preparing strategic plans for the country. In the first stage of this project, you will prepare a tender/proposal which will explicitly outline the information that you will include in the final report (part 2 of the project).
