Students, please view the “Submit a Clickable Rubric Assignment” in the Student Center. Assignment 2: Problem Solving Due Week 9 and worth 150 points When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.” Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note: Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on the assignment.) Scenario 1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not. Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together. Scenario 3: You have two jobs, one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes, one that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two kids, one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings, one who lives two (2) miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay. Scenario 4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you arrive and return another co-worker is already there, and you wonder whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your weekly sales meeting, you are informed of your co-workers’ outstanding sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field, and as a result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired. Scenario 5: Professor’s Choice – problem scenario presented by your professor. Scenario 6: Student’s Choice – Problem scenario presented by you. Review the six-step problem solving process outlined in the webtext, based on the article “The Problem Solving Process” located at http://www.gdrc.org/decision/problem-solve.html: Step One: Define the problem Step Two: Analyze the problem Step Three: Generate options Step Four: Evaluate options Step Five: Make your decision Step Six: Implement and reflect Write a paper in which you: Define the problem in the scenario that you have chosen. Analyze the problem in the scenario. Generate options for solving the problem in the scenario. Evaluate the options for solving the problem. Decide on the best option for solving the problem. Explain how you will implement the decision made and reflect on whether this option was the most effective. Assess the oral language proficiency of each student with the SOLOM.

English language teachers are often tasked with creating assessment plans based on student language proficiency. Teachers assimilate various forms of assessment data to inform their design. For this benchmark, you will develop an assessment plan for three ELLs or bilingual/dual language learners based on their Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM) results, BICS and CALP Checklist, and other information. Part 1: Field Experience D Allocate at least 4 hours to complete this field experience. Work with your mentor teacher or administrator to select three ELLs or bilingual/dual language learners at varying English language proficiency levels to work with at the school where you are completing your field experience. You may include students whom you have worked with in previous assignments. Discuss the ELP assessment results and summative assessment data for the three ELL or bilingual/dual language learners with your mentor teacher. Be sure to specify the English language proficiency levels of your students. Assess the oral language proficiency of each student with the SOLOM. You should also assess their social and academic language by observing each student during normal instruction and administering the BICS and CALP Checklist from Appendix B of your textbook. Be sure to keep your field notes. Document the locations and hours you spend in the field on your Clinical Field Experience Verification Form. Part 2: Assessment Plan Create an assessment plan for each student for the semester. Your assessment plans should be described within an essay that includes the following: An anonymous profile of each student that includes a brief description of the program or material to be studied that semester along with relevant information such as grade, English language proficiency assessment results, Home Language Survey results, and any other pertinent information; Your SOLOM results for each student with a comment regarding how these results compare to the assessment accommodations already in place for each student; An analysis of your findings from the BICS and CALP Checklist for each student with a comment regarding how these results compare to your observations and other summative assessment data; Specific examples of your recommended assessment accommodations to be utilized for each student throughout the semester. Include an analysis of how all of the assessment data that you looked at informed your assessment plan. An analysis of the advantages and limitations of the assessment accommodations that have been recommended as well as the different types of assessment accommodations that have been utilized for each student. Include at least five scholarly sources to support your decisions. Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion. Examine the initial attitudes of both Macbeth and Atticus towards the common good, the conflict that arose in each of their lives and the choices that each character made in dealing with this conflict.

In this activity you will learn about the introductory and concluding paragraphs while using a sample introductory paragraph as a model for your own writing. You will then bring together your brainstorming and outline work from activities one and two and write an essay wherein the characters of Macbeth and Atticus are compared in terms of how they exemplify a commitment to the Common Good. The first thing that you need to do to write an essay is to write a rough introductory paragraph. You will need to look closely at the chart you completed in activity one, and the essay outline that you did in activity two. The points that you made in those assignments are the information that you will need to put together for your introduction. Before you write your thesis, however, read through the second assignment on this page. The question that is asked about Macbeth and Atticus is the one that you must answer in order to write your thesis! Your task: Consider the topic written below in italics. You will write a five-paragraph comparative essay in which you explore, and come to a conclusion about this topic. You have a brainstorming in the activities that you completed in activity one of this unit, and an outline that you completed in activity two of this unit. Now your essay must have a rough copy, be edited, be typed and double-spaced, and be approximately 800-1000 words long. Your thesis will answer the question that is shown in the box below. Over the course of the play Macbeth and the novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, the two characters Macbeth and Atticus each begin as individuals who value the good of the common people. When conflict arises in their world, however, each character handles it differently. One chooses to pursue individual interests through violence, whereas the other puts his own interests at risk in order to defend his beliefs about the common good. This choice has a direct impact upon the fate of each of these characters. Examine the initial attitudes of both Macbeth and Atticus towards the common good, the conflict that arose in each of their lives and the choices that each character made in dealing with this conflict. How did their choices affect their initial attitudes, what course of action did each character pursue in regards to the common good, and what result did this have upon each of their lives?
