The topic of the course is video games and the topic that i chose for my contribution paper is “Racism in Competitive Gaming” which i have done a quick presentation around that i will attach as well. Disseminating, or sharing, evidence-based findings is a vital step in the research process, as it allows the information to be adopted into clinical practice. This task can be accomplished several ways, but is commonly completed through poster presentations, paper publications, writing a health policy brief, or giving a speech before an audience. Although these strategies require similar skills, they differ in their delivery methods (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).

My preferred dissemination strategies are a poster presentation and giving a speech. I am a visual learner, and enjoy having something to look at to guide my learning, which is why I enjoy educating the same way; however, I also enjoy a good, old fashion speech. I pride myself on my public speaking abilities, and genuinely enjoy spreading education to co-workers on topics that I am passionate about. This is typically done in our breakroom during our pre-shift meetings, and is a very casual speech regarding updates on certain topics that I’m a super-user for. Barriers that I have encountered with my preferred strategies include not reaching a sufficient amount of staff, or lack of interest in the topic. To overcome not reaching enough staff members, I will typically present my speech or presentation on a few separate days or nights to reach a wider range of people. Additionally, to draw interest into the topic being presented, I will attempt to bring a candy associated with my topic. For example, if my topic was related to stool, I would bring a Hershey kiss.

The dissemination strategies I would be least inclined to use would be publicizing a paper and writing a health policy brief. Masset et al. (2013) conducted a study on the effectiveness of a health policy brief and concluded that although further research was indicated, initial results showed no evidence of a change in prior beliefs. Additionally, Hagan (2017) says that publicizing results may be an effective dissemination strategy, but it’s not innovative. As I stated previously, I enjoy talking to people to educate or spread the word about something. I don’t typically enjoy writing papers, and despite my experience in a health policy course last quarter, my experience with that is quite limited. I feel as though in order to effectively spread your knowledge, you must enjoy spreading it.
