In this essay, King asserts that education has both a utilitarian (useful) and a moral function (what is right): To save man from the morass of propaganda, in my opinion, is one of the chief aims of education. Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction….Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education. TOPIC: Develop an argument as to whether Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ideas about the purpose of education is still relevant today. Ideas to consider: What does he mean by “morass of propaganda.” Why is it education’s duty to arm students against it? Have there been people in authority who have given the nation false information? How could a ″true education″ help in responding to these false information? Support your ideas with one of your readings from Zinsser “the right to fail” Structure/length: 1. introduction/claim 2. background information (general ideas about education) 3. refute 4. reasons–2-3 paragraphs with specific evidence from video/reading 5. conclusion

Answers should reflect awareness of the assigned reading, the instructor’s lectures, the weekly discussions and your own ideas. Remember, I expect to see your original thought. I only want you to use the sources listed above and your own ideas (I don’t want you to search for other sources).

1) Differentiate how a consequentialist and a deontologist might think about the morality of lying. Is it wrong to lie, or might it be acceptable? Why? Which of these perspectives do you most agree with?

2) How can a person be happy? Explain what Aristotle thinks happiness consists in, and how one can be happy. Differentiate primary and secondary goods. Do you think Aristotle is correct about primary goods? Why? In the Myth of Gyges Plato implies something troubling about happiness. What is this implication? Is it inconsistent with Aristotle’s thoughts on happiness?

3) In John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty, an argument is made in favor of freedom of expression. Explain the reasons for allowing freedom of expression, and also explain the possible objections to freedom of expression (such as the objection arising from Plato’s Ship of Fools). Do you think we should be allowed to express ourselves as we wish? What might go wrong?

4) Imagine you are able to save many people by causing harm to one person, as in the Trolley Problem. Is it morally better to save many or to remain uninvolved? Make an argument defending a course of action and explain why your recommended course of action is morally best. How should one decide what the best course of action is?
