This week you’ll watch a marvelous Studio Ghibli animation by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.” https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-rB_utcHsu-TTSibw8yX9lluqxT-GupR/viewYou can find examples of ecocritical scholarship about Miyazaki on your own, if you’d like. Attached here is “An Ecocritical Reading of Miyazaki’s ‘Nausicaä: Territory, Toxicity and Animals ‘,” which appears to be 25 pages long. I’d like to note that the author Phacharawan Boonpromkul from Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, has added pictures from the movie and pretty huge margins. Some of the paper is in Thai, as well. So it’s not really a 25-page read.From this paper, you’ll get a richer understanding of how a cultural scholar uses a theory like ecocriticism to analyze deeply themes and ideas in the film. Notice that Boonpromkul (you can check out her playlists on YouTube) cites ecocritical scholars we’ve read or read about, including Lawrence Buell and Greg Garrard

Discuss Ecofeminism in “Avatar”.

I’m giving you two things to read.The first is an introduction to ecofeminist literary criticism by Gretchen T. Legler.The second is “Waking Up From Avatar,” a chapter from my book “Enviro-toons: Green Themes in Animated Cinema and Television.” It’s long, so feel free to scan it. (Then again, I’m such a fun writer. You’ll want to read every word!)In your post, describe the movie from an ecocritical perspective. The film makes the case of the ecofeminists, perhaps.
