For this discussion, you must read Chapter 6 of the text, Introduction to Sociology: 06 Socialization (Links to an external site.), the article, The Anomie Tradition: Explaining Rates of Deviant Behavior, Durkheim’s classic contribution (Links to an external site.), and the Anomie theory reading from Key Perspectives in Criminology, found in the ebrary database. After reading the required resources, explain why Emile Durkheim alleges that if we did not have deviants, we would create them. In other words, Durkheim is making an argument that having a group of people society considers deviant serves broader functions for society. What are these functions?

The National Labor Relations Act was passed in 1935. In 1944, 35% of the workforce were members of an organized union. In 2016, private-sector workers (those workers not in the government, schools, etc) only had 6.4% participation in unions.

What do you think are the reasons?
Has the culture changed?
Is the National Labor Relations Act as important now as it was?
Are the reasons for unionization not as valid and they were?
If that is the case, why are 34.4% of public sector employees unionized today?

Right to Privacy

Individuals are relinquishing their Right to Privacy more and more.

Sometimes willingly by posting on Facebook and Twitter, etc., and sometimes unwillingly [or unknowing] such as recent Facebook release of information to an outside group or police surveillance.

Is this trend going to continue? What right does an individual have to keep themselves private given that everything they do such as order online, pay with credit card, GPS on their phone etc, forces them to relinquish privacy in order to function in society?

Discussion questions will be posted each module/week. Threads in response to the questions must reflect critical thought, relate the course content to real-world applications with biblical perspectives, and cite any sources used.

2. Consider where you are now in relation to your long-term goals and aspirations. Reflect on your current knowledge, skills, and experience. Think about your areas of strength and areas for growth, including areas of study and professional interaction that have been most interesting and inspiring to you. Consider this information within the context of each of the following core areas of the early childhood profession:
   • Safe and Healthy Learning Environments
   • Physical and Intellectual Development
   • Social and Emotional Development
   • Relationships With Families
   • Program Management
   • Professionalism
   • Observing and Recording Behavior
   • Child Growth and Development
3. Record your areas of strength, areas for growth, and areas of interest and inspiration for at least three of these areas on the Professional Development Worksheet.
4. With these areas in mind, formulate three very specific and clear near-term goals—measureable goals that you will achieve in the next 6 months to 1 year. List them on the worksheet. These will be the goals that drive your Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP).

Part II: Research to Inform Professional Development

Each of the near-term goals you identified on your Professional Development Worksheet is impacted by the broader landscape of the early childhood field. For example, you may have a goal of initiating advocacy efforts in an area in which new sources of funding are being made available at a national level. Or, it may be an area in which funding is being withdrawn. Understanding how your goals are influenced by current research, policies, issues, and trends can help you to be more strategic in deciding where to focus your professional growth and learning.

Consider each of the near-term goals you identified on your Professional Development Worksheet. In “Section Two” of the worksheet, summarize the larger context at the community, state, national, and/or global levels as follows:

1. Describe at least three examples of current research, policies, issues, and/or trends that inform your near-term goals. Explain how the current research, policies, issues, and/or trends support or impede your ability to reach your goals.
2. Explain how you can apply your learning about the research, policies, issues, or trends to advance toward achieving your goals.Attaining your goals requires far more than identifying what you would like to achieve. You also need to identify specific strategies and resources for achieving each goal, a timeline for completion, and progress measures. These are the components of an Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP). Your IPDP serves becomes the cornerstone of your professional development. It serves as a guidepost for your professional development, providing pathways for translating your goals into concrete action steps.

   Based on the information you gathered in your worksheet, complete the IPDP Template to create your Individual Professional Development Plan. An example of how to fill out each column is provided in the first row of the template.

   After completing the IPDP, choose two action steps from your plan to implement. Provide evidence to demonstrate that you completed the action step and attach it as an appendix to your IPDP. Examples of evidence might include such items as a certificate of attendance from a professional conference, interview notes, and/or photographs.

Based on your preferred learning style as identified from the VARK Assessment, and what we have learned about adult learning theory (Andragogy) principles, how could your personal learning style and learning preferences most influence your training design? Share some pros and cons – how might they be effective and how might they limit a good design?

Vessing (2011) states, “a society needs a variety of social institutions in order to function adequately. However, it does appear that not all citizens have equal access to participation in them, and that one’s social class and ascribed characteristics may limit one’s ability to benefit from them. This disparity results in unequal access to all that the institutions have to offer” (p. 197). Review the various social institutions discussed in Chapters 10 and 11 of the text, Sociology: Beyond Common Sense.

Based on what you have read in the text, describe at least two institutions that do not provide equal access? If you were asked to implement changes from a sociological perspective, what changes would you suggest? Support your answer with detailed examples.

According to conflict theorists, the persistence of social class inequality can be linked to the educational institutions in the United States. Although education is asserted to be a social equalizer, many argue that the educational system is a mechanism of social reproduction that maintains social inequality rather than ensuring equality of opportunity. For this discussion, you will read Chapters 10 and 11 of the text, Sociology: Beyond Common Sense, and review the article, Foundations of Educational Inequality.

Answer the following questions:

• What factors influence the quality of education that an individual receives?
• How is social class reproduced through the educational system?
• How is this continuing educational inequality impacting other social institutions?
