Physiological changes occur throughout our lives and can have significant effects on our self-esteem. Some of these changes can be more significant than others. As argued in Chapter 4 of the course textbook, physical events that occur during our life (i.e., puberty, loss of senses, illness) may have physiological effects.

Using the theoretical knowledge you have gained from your required reading for this week, discuss a time in life, based on personal or vicarious experiences, when you felt that physical changes were most impactful to you (early childhood, middle childhood, young adulthood, middle age). Share only information that you are comfortable with, or you may use another’s experiences or a fictitious example.

Consider the following questions as you discuss:

Do you believe neural plasticity was a significant variable during this chosen stage of your (or another’s) life? Why or why not?
Did synaptic pruning, based on this event, alter the way you now view the world? If so, what about your worldview changed? Explain.
Did the event shape who you are as a person (your identity)?
Based on your knowledge and your experiences, indicate the advice you might give to someone who is experiencing something similar?

Shriner and Shriner (2014) state that

“Teenagers who have close relationships with their parents are less likely to initiate sexual activity at an early age (Bynum, 2007). Further, parents who have a good line of com­munication with their adolescents seem to delay the onset of sexual activity as well (Aspy et al., 2007)”. This is further substantiated by additional research, located in your required resources: Sutton, Lasswell, Lanier, and Miller’s (2014).

Based on your personal and vicarious experiences, assess whether you agree with this research or not. Support your explanation with supporting examples or with scholarly citations.
Describe a real-life event that could interfere with the research findings. (Example: Sarah recently lost her grandmother and has felt very sad. She finds this subject hard to talk to her parents about. There is also a boy who has given her a great amount of attention lately and seems open to listening to her.) Prior to beginning this activity, read Chapter 12: School, Work, and Leisure, in the course textbook. In addition, to support a deep reflection about your knowledge gained from this chapter, reflect on your own educational journey, from your childhood through the present.

• Identify and explain key points throughout out your lifespan (childhood, adolescence, and adulthood) that have left an impression on your beliefs about receiving an education.
  • Include at least three experiences: one in childhood, one as a teen, and one as an adult.
  • Identify what led to the events and what effects each event has had on your academic journey or beliefs about earning a degree.
• Identify factors suggested to be effectors of development, by your weekly reading that align with your experiences (i.e., childcare, preparedness, learning environment). Share only information that you are comfortable with, or you may use another’s experiences or a fictitious example.
  • To successfully do this, add proper citations throughout your writing.

1. Hypotheses – Formulate null and alternative hypotheses. What do you think is the relationship between IQ scores and GPA?
2. Variables – Describe the scale of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio) for each of the variables.
3. Correlation – Write an overview of the results of the correlation (at least two paragraphs), including the appropriate and necessary statistical results within sentences and in proper APA formatting. Be sure to provide sufficient explanation for any numbers presented. Consider the following in your overview and conclusions:
   • Is there a significant correlation between IQ scores and GPA? If so, what does a significant correlation mean?
   • Using the correlation table and scatterplot, explain whether the relationship is positive, negative, or no correlation.
   • Describe the strength of the relationship (e.g. very strong, moderate, weak, etc.).
   • What do the results tell us about your hypotheses?
   • What conclusions can we draw from these results? What conclusions can we NOT make using these results?

Throughout the course, you have studied a variety of theories about leadership. By now, you should be developing your own perspective on who the leader is and what the leader does. You likely have gravitated towards certain styles and ideas about leadership.

For the Week 5 paper, you will design a leadership development program for an organization of your choice.

Tasks:

• Summarize the key details about your organization. What is it? What does it do? How does it currently develop (or not develop leaders)? Don’t just copy and paste your writing from the Week 1 introduction. Further summarize organizational details.
• Assess leadership. What is it? Why is it important?
• Defend an approach (e.g., style or theory) to leadership that you wish to replicate throughout the organization you have selected. Why is it appropriate for the organization?
• Design a leadership development plan to infuse your selected leadership approach into the organization. The plan can be a 2- to 3-page summary of a process, set of action steps, modules, or other means you will use to develop leaders.
• Propose a leadership succession perspective for your organization. Why is succession planning important? What are the consequences of failing to do so? What are the benefits of having a succession plan? What are 3 or 4 critical action steps the organization should take to build good leadership succession?
• Synthesize your self-development in leadership perspective and practice as a result of study in the course. What did you think about leadership coming into the course? How has your thinking and practice changed because of your study?

Case studies are an important learning strategy in business classes as they provide an opportunity for you to critically analyze events that have taken place in real-life businesses. This develops your critical thinking and research skills as you research the competition and industry in which your business resides with an end goal of formulating a recommendation for the challenges faced by the company.

Select one of the three case studies listed below, which can be found in your textbook. Evaluate the case of your choice, and respond to each of the questions below using both theory and practical managerial thinking as well as supporting research.

Option 1: Southwest Airlines (pp. 490–491)

1. What is the product and service model of Southwest? Who is their primary target market, and how is Southwest positioned with this group?
2. What is the pricing strategy of Southwest compared to other airlines? Is this a differentiating factor?
3. What risks does Southwest Airlines face both from a macro and micro environmental standpoint?
4. Can Southwest continue to thrive as a low-cost airline when tough economic times hit or as other airlines mimic its business model?

Option 2: Amazon.com (pp. 522–523)

1. With respect to the distribution, why has Amazon succeeded when so many other companies have failed?
2. From a theoretical standpoint, what is Amazon’s pricing model? Why is this so effective? How does this compare to their competitors?
3. Discuss how Amazon has used differentiation and positioning as two key components in maintaining a competitive advantage.
4. Thinking about the changes in the macro and micro environment, what is next for Amazon? Where else can it grow?

Option 3: Best Buy (pp. 554–555)

1. What were the keys to Best Buy’s success? How have they differentiated themselves?
2. What pricing model has Best Buy adopted?
3. What are the challenges it faces in today’s retail environment from both a micro and macro environmental standpoint?
4. How else can Best Buy compete against retail competitors like Walmart and Costco as well as online competitors like Amazon.com?

How should cache handling be accomplished in order to minimize the ability of the attacker to deliver a payload through the cache?

As you consider the reputation service and the needs of customers or individual consumers, as well as, perhaps, large organizations that are security conscious like our fictitious enterprise, Digital Diskus, what will be the expectations and requirements of the customers? Will consumers’ needs be different from those of enterprises? Who owns the data that is being served from the reputation service? In addition, what kinds of protections might a customer expect from other customers when accessing reputations?

Review the employment tab on a local school district’s website, and consider the following questions:

• What kind of positions are available?
• What skills and experience are necessary to obtain the posted positions?
• Where else could you look for teaching positions in your city?
• What information from your current program of study would be important to build your resume?

Review and reflect upon the NAEYC ethical code of conduct. Identify two standards you are confident in implementing in the classroom. What is one standard where you might seek more support?
