Explain the evaluation methodology: Was it a quantitative or qualitative study – or aspects of both? What specific type of methodology was used?

1. Tell me the general area of crime solutions your discussion group chose to explore. (This may have changed since the first group worksheet discussion so be sure to update it) **** https://www.crimesolutions.gov/ProgramDetails.aspx?ID=58 (USE THIS for main source) it explains all those steps and then do research to answer the criteria but mainly this is the main source for the experiment. 2. Tell me the specific program you chose to evaluate – identify it by name and author(s)’s last names. Explain why you chose to evaluate this particular program (EX you might discuss why the program is interesting to you, how it might relate to your future career, and so on). (The program you are evaluating may have changed from your paper proposal – be sure to include the updated information and refer to your proposal feedback) 3.Tell me about the goals of the program and what problem specifically the program is meant to address. 4. Tell me specifically whom the program is meant to help. 5. Tell me what the evaluation outcomes are. 6.Explain the evaluation methodology: Was it a quantitative or qualitative study – or aspects of both? What specific type of methodology was used? (EX survey, experiment, interviews…) Who were the program participants? What were their socio-demographics characteristics? How were these participants selected? If it’s a quantitative study, what were the dependent, independent, and control variables? If it’s a qualitative study, what were the overarching themes found in the data? (This can be found on the program overview webpage, but can also be found in the research article(s) associated with your program) (Be sure to refer to the Research Methods chapter and lecture information) 7.Explain the results of the study. Was the program successful? What were the strengths and weaknesses of the program? (You will find this in the research article associated with your program) 8. If your program is successful, explain to me why you think that is. If your program was not successful, tell me why you believe it was not successful and how to make it better (incorporate class material into either explanation). 9. Tell me which of the theories we have covered in class most exemplifies your chosen program. In other words, tell me which theory you think your chosen program could be based on and why it could be based on that theory. To do this successfully, you will need to explain the theory’s propositions, and then explain how the propositions apply to the program to explain it. (The theory explanation is to describe how the program might have been using the theory for the program’s design – the theory is not about explaining the criminal behavior, per se) 10. Are there any ethical considerations covered by the authors of the report. For instance, did they have to get IRB approval prior to conducting the study? Are they working with protected populations and how do they handle ensuring their safety? Are there considerations of confidentiality, anonymity, and the like? Did they receive funding from an outside source or organization that might bias the study’s results in some way? (This is not an exhaustive list – look over the Research Methods chapter and lecture information to ensure you cover any and all ethnical considerations. Also, the authors may not explicitly state these ethical concerns – you will need to analyze the study and make your own determinations)

In relation to “Things Fall Apart Essay”, write Okonkwo’s obituary/remembrance of his legacy from the perspective of his son, Nwoye.

The second major writing assignment for the class is based on the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. You have two options: First is to assume the role or a missionary in the village of Umuofia and write a persuasive letter to the English Crown in which you either argue for continued intervention in Nigeria or advocate the withdraw of British forces. Therefore, you must read through the eyes of an English missionary on the ground in Umuofia. Know that your audience has little knowledge about African culture, so you must explain why you believe that intervention is merited or should stop. Although your thesis must take a stance of pro-intervention or withdraw, you may provide suggestions to the English Crown on how to move forward. You must use specific examples from the text to explain your rationale. At first, this may seem like an easy answer; however, you must consider all aspects of Umuofian culture, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Okonkwo is a deeply flawed character, but at the same time, we can empathize with him since the world around him changes so much. Second is to assume the role of Okonkwo’s first son, Nwoye. Nwoye leaves the village to become a missionary. I want you to write a letter to your father after you receive word that he was arrested by the British authorities. You should reflect on your Igbo culture and the Village of Umuofia, and explain to Okonkwo why you left. You could also talk about the church and discuss your new life, but most of your analysis should focus on your childhood and your memories of Okonkwo. Consider Okonkwo’s stories as a journal. As a missionary, you read his story, which both humanizes the Umuofian people and gives you unique insights into a misunderstood culture. As Nwoye, you have life experience living with the deeply flawed Okonkwo, you should consider Things Fall Apart as a journal after your departure. Since this essay has you assume an identity, you will have to use personal pronouns in your paper. However, you must keep in mind that you are writing to a well-educated and versed audience, so your writing should be academic and refined (you should not change how you write a traditional academic paper, but you can have some fun with flattering or ingratiating language). OR You can write Okonkwo’s obituary/remembrance of his legacy from the perspective of his son, Nwoye. You should take into account the full character development of Okonkwo, but you should not shy away from the oftentimes distant relationship of Nwoye’s father. How should Okonkwo be remembered? What is his legacy? Is anyone to blame for his death? There is a lot of creative freedom with this option, but you should stick to the text as much as possible.

Describe a character other than Abel, but in relationship to him.

Describe a character other than Abel, but in relationship to him. What role(s) does this character play in the novel? What can be said about the person’s religious life and connections to tradition? How does this person interact with Abel—as a relative, friend, lover, victim…? These are only some of the questions you might address. Be creative. We are looking for your level of engagement with the text. You may tweak the question if you wish. For example, you might choose to analyze “the land” as a character. In a broader frame, you may wish to tackle the relationship of religion and literature—e.g., What might we learn about “religion” from fiction, with specific reference to this book and the themes we’ve addressed this semester?

Identify at least three key developments that led to the “fall” of the Roman Empire in the West from about 200-500 AD.

Below you will find a choice of three different essay questions. Select two questions from the list of essay prompts below and write a long essay response to each of the questions you select. To repeat: you only need to answer two of the following essay questions. Essays will be graded on the sophistication of the arguments and the depth of analysis presented, and not on the simple recapitulation of facts. Make sure, wherever possible, to make use of the primary sources we’ve looked at to support your points. Essays that don’t make use of any primary source evidence will not be given higher than a “C” grade for that particular essay. Each essay is worth 50pts, total exam = 100pts. Essays should be in a single word or pdf document. They should be 12pt font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins. Each essay should be no less than two pages. While we will not be taking points off for going over the limit, please be advised that essays well under two pages will lose points for lack of thoroughness and effort. Please put both of your essays into one document and upload them to the assignment dropbox by 11:59pm on Sunday, December 8th. Consider the period of the Late Roman Republic, from the arrival of the Gracchi (ca. 133 BC) down to the outbreak of civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey in 49 BC. What were some of the major issues or problems that lay behind the unraveling of the traditional, republican political order and the escalating frequency of civil unrest? You may wish to highlight specific individuals and why they were problematic, but also remember the role of certain classes or groups in the Roman socio-political order, as well as other unsolved problems that existed in the state/empire. Make sure to refer to primary sources throughout your arguments where possible. Octavian emerged from civil war in the Late Republic to become the sole ruler at Rome and over its empire. We regard him, particularly under the name Augustus, as the first Roman emperor, and he was arguably the most successful of any. Write an essay that specifically discusses why Augustus’ immediate successors, the Julio-Claudians, were nowhere near as successful in ruling as he had been. Focus carefully on what Augustus had created in terms of ruling and how effective the following four emperors (Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero) were in upholding and working with this. Make sure you refer to the primary sources we’ve looked at for the reign of Augustus and his successors. Identify at least three key developments that led to the “fall” of the Roman Empire in the West from about 200-500 AD. Make sure to explain how you think each of these developments affected, changed or reshaped society. You may want to think about both long-term issues as well as shorter-term crises or changes. Make sure to make use of the primary sources to support your points.
